The best way to trim the wick after each use with a wick trimmer or nail-clipper. If you do not have neither, you may use standard scissors. Trim wicks down to 1/4" inch to prevent soot.

Keep candle away from moving air. A candle should always be placed in a still environment away from air-conditioner, windows, and moving persons. Moving air causes the flame to dance around and create a black marks around the vessel.
